Commemorating the Battle of the Somme

I was honoured to be able to travel to France to commemorate the centenary of the Battle of the Somme.

Battle of the Somme

This photo was taken at the Tyneside Irish and Tyneside Scottish memorial at la Boiselle, on the 1st of July at 7:30am, the moment the attack commenced 100 years ago. There was four battalions of Tyneside Scottish and Tyneside Irish Northumberland Fusiliers, and by lunchtime they had suffered dreadful casualties and fatalities.

My thanks to Graeme Heron for arranging the event.

My husband and I were honoured to have attended the Somme Commemorations at the Thiepval Memorial on the 1st July. It was a long journey from Newcastle but well well worth it. It was awesome and so beautiful. On the Saturday along with our guide and the rest of the coach we visited several sites including the Tyneside Memorial Seat at La Boisselle. Imagine our surprise and delight when we saw your wreath on the seat. It really lifted our spirits to think that known people had bothered and remembered. I have no idea why you were there but talking to people at Theipval everyone had their own and different reasons for being there. I felt so proud to be a Geordie.
